“We will color your hair, put brown contact lenses on the baby blues and you will open your mouth and Jeff’s voice will come out?” a skeptical Mary Guibert told Black of the star in an interview published on Saturday, January 25.
Despite Pitt inviting Guibert to his wedding with his ex -wife Jennifer AnistonGuibert would not rock. The couple kept talking about the possibility of a movie about Buckley’s life and with the help of the director Amy Bergeventually landed in the best way to pay tribute to the deceased musician: a documentary.
“When I started listening to his voicemail messages and his DAP player and demos and reading his records, I just couldn’t imagine it was anything but a documentary,” Berg explained to the business. “And I just didn’t know how to repeat Jeff in that manuscript.”
The result is the documentary It’s never over, Jeff Buckleywhich premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2025 on Friday, January 24.
Son of Guibert and Musician Tim BuckleyThere left when his son was six months old and later died of an overdose of drugs at the age of 28, the younger Buckley signed a three-album deal with Columbia Records in 1992 for almost $ 1 million. He released his only record, Grace, in 1994, but struggled to deal with the overwhelming praise of fans and musicians he admired, like his idol Bob Dylan.
His death three years later was, as Variety put it, “shrouded in mysticism.” Rolling Stone Published a study of what went wrong that night, but failed to include Buckley’s autopsy results, something that Berg believes “contributed to the legacy that Jeff probably overdose.” Instead, the singer drowned because of the strong undercurrent of the massive river.
“One of the big things about Jeff Buckley is that you discover him when it’s meant you should discover him,” Berg also said of the singer, who may still be best known for his cover of Leonard Cohens “Hallelujah.”
“He has certainly made a big impact on Tiktok, where I was surprised to see that he has more followers on Jeff Buckley hashtag than even Bob Dylan,” she continued. “He definitely has another moment in the history of pop culture.”
