Kelce’s touchdown on Wednesday meant the 35-year-old athlete hit Tony Gonzalez‘s previous record for most career touchdown receptions. In celebration, Kelce dunked the ball in a tribute to Gonzalez himself.
“I’ve followed him since he was a rookie and I’m not surprised,” Gonzalez, 48, said during a November broadcast of NFL on Prime Video. “He’s one of the greatest tight ends of all time. … If he dunks it, I’ll pay that fine!”
It is against NFL rules to throw a football through the goal post, often resulting in a large fine for unsportsmanlike conduct. The league has not confirmed further details about a potential fine.
Kelce’s touchdown led the Chiefs to a 29-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Him and teammate Patrick Mahomes were named the official game MVPs, where they were given Santa-inspired puffy robes and a red velvet cake wrapped in the shape of a football.

In a post-game interview, Kelce opened up about his milestone record.
“That’s everything for me. Tony has been a mentor to me, he’s been right there for me [with] any question I’ve ever had,” gushed Kelce. “I feel like I’m still trying to fill that guy’s shoes.”

He added: “He’s such an incredible competitor and I have so much love for him. It’s an honor to be in talks with him.”
Quarterback Mahomes, 29, also acknowledged Kelce’s performance.
“We’ve got a lot of weapons out there. We’re getting healthy at the right time,” Mahomes said. “The big guy leads us all, but we’ve got guys everywhere. I try to keep going as long as I can.”
The Chiefs’ win over the Steelers gives the Missouri team the No. 1 in their AFC conference.

“I thought it was a team performance. The defense stepped up, the offense stepped up [and] everybody had their mark on the game,” Mahomes said. “I told my pregnant wife [Brittany Mahomes] I had to pick up seed no. 1, so we can have the baby.”
Patrick and Brittany, 29, are currently expecting their third child. In a pregame interview Wednesday, Patrick told the sportscaster Kay Adams that his wife is due “anytime now”.
Brittany, for her part, didn’t travel to Pittsburgh for game day and instead watched the NFL game from home in KC with kids Sterling, 3, and Bronze, 21.
“Baking and watching Daddy,” Brittany wrote via Instagram Story on Wednesday afternoon.
